Joann Pierce and Phyllis Miller

On Wednesday, September 5, the new KIPP School that is now an official part of Landrum Middle School had a welcoming program for the parents and friends of the children enrolled in the school. The children had a good time waving ribbons and chanting to a delighted audience. Guests at the program included Dr. Klussmann, Superintendent of Spring Branch Independent School District, and Helena Brown, City Council Member.

Mr. Luis Pratt         Mr.. Eric Schmidt

Mr. Luis Pratt is the Principal of Landrum Middle School. He greeted people with his fellow Principal, Eric M. Schmidt who serves as Principal of the KIPP School. The KIPP School is a charter school within Landrum Middle School that focuses on college preparation for the students who are enrolled.

KIPP is a charter program that has a longer school day and school year with an emphasis on preparing the students for college. More than 100 fifth grade students began the new school year as the inaugural class at KIPP Courage College Prep.

Back-To-School Immunizations…Beat The Rush!

Reposted from: http://www.judgeemmett.org/Newsletters/Newsletter_July_2012.html

The 2012-2013 school year will soon be here, and one of the most important things parents can do to keep their children healthy is to make sure they receive all the recommended vaccinations on time. Be aware, as children get older, protection from some of their childhood vaccines can begin to wear off.
The following is a list of the required vaccines for students who will attend a Texas school during the upcoming school year. Students without the required immunizations or a valid exemption will not be allowed to attend school.
Vaccines Required for Students Entering Kindergarten Through 12th grade:
3-5 doses of diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP/DTP/DT/Td)
3-4 doses of polio
2 doses of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)
3 doses of hepatitis B
1-2 doses of varicella
1 booster dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) 5-10 years after the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria-containing vaccine, depending on grade level
In addition, requirements for hepatitis A, varicella, Tdap and meningococcal vaccines are being phased in by grade level.  For a complete schedule, please review the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) 2012-2013 Immunization Requirements chart at
http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/immunize/school/default.shtm#schools.
Contact your child’s health care provider for help in determining which vaccines your child needs and the number of required doses.
Harris County Public Health & Environmental Services (HCPHES) provides immunizations by appointment at the following health clinics:

Vaccinations for College Students
College students also need to be up-to-date on immunizations.  A student entering college must show that he received an initial bacterial meningitis vaccination dose or booster during the five-year period preceding the first day of the first semester.  The vaccination or booster must be received no later than 10 days before that first day of class.  Contact your health care provider for more information.
The Texas Immunization Registry (ImmTrac) is a secure and confidential registry that helps combine your child’s immunization information from multiple providers to one centralized system.  It’s simple to register your child.  A parent or legal guardian needs to sign a one-time written ImmTrac consent form at the child’s next vaccination visit.  Only authorized professionals can access the child’s information, and a parent can request their child’s record anytime, at no cost.  Encourage your physician to participate in ImmTrac.
The Vaccines for Children Program (VFC) helps provide vaccines to children who are on Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), or uninsured.  To locate a VFC provider in the Harris County area, contact the Texas Department of State Health Services at 713-767-3000 or dial 2-1-1.
For more information about immunizations, please visit www.hcphes.org or call 713-439-6000.

Save The Children of Ridgecrest

School will be starting in a matter of a few weeks. This will mean, as we all know, children walking to school. One of the most serious problems Ridgecrest and the Spring Branch School District is currently facing is the flooding of the sidewalks in the 2000 Block of Ridgecrest. This is the block, on the west side of the street where the School is.

When it rains, the sidewalks flood and the children that are walking have to walk in the street. This must stop now, at all costs.

I have made contact with everyone I know, and it appears to me, that this issue is on their “back burner” because they keep interpreting that we need sidewalks! We do not! We need for the flooding issue to be addressed! This has been a problem for a long, long time.

You can help with this problem by sending emails to anyone, and everyone, you know down at City Hall, State of Texas, etc.

We are the people of Ridgecrest, and our children are our greatest assets!

Please help.

Sincerely,

Doris Hinson-President
Ridgecrest Civic C.lub

Barbara Marland, Early Supporter of the Ridgecrest Civic Club

Barbara Marland has lived in the Ridgecrest area for over forty years and was an early supporter of the Ridgecrest Civic Club serving at one time as secretary of the organization. During her involvement with the Ridgecest Civic Club she was instrumental in helping to develop the Deed Restrictions for the area. Her work with the Stewart Title Company gave her access to important information that was needed in the development of the area’s Deed Restrictions.

Barbara has led an interesting life and has many delightful stories to tell. She was born in Phenix City, Alabama and graduated from Columbia High School in 1955. After graduation she joined the Air Force and was stationed in San Antonio.

Music has always been an important part of her life. When still a child she took piano lessons and then played alto sax in the High School Band and when she joined the Air Force she also played alto sax with the Air Force Band. Barbara met her husband, Charles Marland, in the Air Force and they purchased a home in San Antonio. After she left the service she went to work for Stewart Title Company in their real estate office. She continued to work for them until she retired at the age of sixty-five.

Stewart Title transferred her to their Houston office in 1972 and she purchased the home on Cedel Drive where she currently lives. She has two children, Charles and Carol who grew up in the Spring Branch area. Charles lives now in Brenham and has three children and nine grand children. Barbara’s daughter Carol lives in the Briar Forest area of Houston so Barbara is fortunate to have family close.

Barbara stays active with her Church and her music. She served as pianist for the Church for many years. She is currently singing with the Bayou City Singers who perform at several local Assisted Living Centers for the enjoyment of the residents.

She has many memories of the Ridgecrest Civic Club and it’s projects and activities. She remembers when the RCC sponsored street parades and she remembers the great Christmas parties where she would lead the singing. The RCC is fortunate to have had the participation of people with Barbara’s special skills.

A note about heavy trash pickup

In Ridgecrest, we have heavy trash pickup once a month. It switches from month to month between Tree Waste and Junk Waste. Tree Waste is stuff like tree limbs, branches, and stumps. Junk Waste are bigger items, like broken furniture, construction debris and other things, IN ADDITION TO Tree Waste. Note, though that a homeowner can have things like sheetrock etc. in the Junk Waste pile but a home remodeler cannot leave it at the home he is remodeling for the city to carry off.

Junk waste can contain tree waste, but Tree Waste cannot contain Junk Waste.

You can get more information from Houston Solid Waste’s Trash Facts website
